Smart Mobility Cane

The Smart Mobility Cane empowers users to safely and confidently navigate both familiar and unfamiliar environments with improved awareness and independence.

Para qué sirve

Our Smart Mobility Cane helps users to overcome: hazards above ground level, limited detection range, difficulty locating dropped canes

Qué te inspiró

Our inspiration came from the real, everyday struggles of visually impaired individuals, particularly those navigating complex environments like crowded transport hubs, shopping malls, or older buildings with low ceilings and overhead obstacles. “What if we could build a smart, ergonomic, and affordable cane that detects obstacles both at foot level and at head height, and helps the user avoid injury — without relying solely on physical contact?”

Cómo funciona

The cane combines mechanical design and embedded electronics: Obstacle Detection Two ultrasonic sensors scan the user’s path (up to 150 cm). If an object is detected, a vibration motor activates, alerting the user via tactile feedback. Fall Detection The MPU6050 accelerometer + gyroscope detects sudden freefall or impact. A buzzer (≥60 dB) alerts others and helps the user locate the cane within 5 seconds. Manual Mode A slide switch lets users disable sensors during commutes (e.g., MRT), preventing false alerts. Power & Structure Powered by a 9V battery. Adjustable shaft fits a range of heights. All electronics are safely encased and splash-resistant.

Proceso de diseño

The project followed a rigorous mechanical design methodology: User & Market Research: Input from visually impaired users, caregivers, and rehabilitation centers QFD & PDS Development: Formal mapping of user needs to engineering specs Morphological Chart & Concept Scoring: Design brainstorming and filtering Prototyping Iterations (4 rounds): Ergonomics testing Integration of electronics Sensor calibration Final optimization for usability and robustness We also ensured technical safety (insulation, shock resistance) and ease of use during real-life testing.

Qué lo hace diferente

Compared to market offerings: VEXIGO, Ara by STRAP, and NOA by Biped are bulky or expensive ($3,000+). Our cane costs a fraction of that ($68.52), making it accessible to low-income users. Unlike other canes that either detect or signal, ours combines both, with added modularity and user controls. Its sleek design, multifunctionality, low cost, and user-centered features make it stand out.

Planes para el futuro

Miniaturization of electronics for an even lighter and thinner form factor Weatherproofing for outdoor use in all climates Smart alert integration (email/caregiver notification) Bluetooth feedback for pairing with smartphones Commercial prototyping and user trials with accessibility organizations in Singapore
