Para qué sirve
Power generates and stores energy for charging small electronic devices and encourages physical activity. It combines practical function with care for mental and physical comfort, offering a sense of self-sufficiency in challenging conditions.
Qué te inspiró
We began exploring the problem of a blackout—an undefined power outage—not only from the obvious perspective of the lack of light or the inability to use or charge electronic devices, but also as a psychologically demanding experience for people. Considering both of these aspects, and recognizing that physical activity can significantly improve mental well-being, especially when confined indoors, the natural solution became clear: a bicycle that generates energy.
Cómo funciona
An average user can generate between 50 and 100 watts of power in an hour, while a professional cyclist can reach 360–370 watts. The choice of a 100W generator accounts for inevitable energy losses that occur at each stage of the system. The generator reaches full efficiency (100%) only at a speed of 10 m/s (36 km/h). The charging system of the trainer consists of a chain drive, a 100W DC-DC generator (integrated into the flywheel), a 5V converter, a fuse, and a charging station built into the base of the trainer. This station includes four ports for power banks, which were selected specifically for their ability to store and carry the generated energy. The height of the handlebars, the seat, and the distance between them can be adjusted using locking pins, which secure each element in the desired position. An analog odometer displays the theoretical distance traveled. All components and design choices were made with durability and ease of maintenance in mind.
Proceso de diseño
The goal of this project was to create a device that generates and stores energy while promoting physical activity and well-being—both during a blackout and daily life. A key aspect was selecting a generator that minimizes energy loss while accommodating various effort levels, from light to intense cycling. We also focused on effective energy storage, allowing users to access power whenever and wherever needed. With user comfort in mind, the trainer is adjustable in height and riding style. Careful dimensioning of each component ensured users of different body types could ride comfortably and adjust their position. Prototyping involved 3D printing and laser cutting, using silhouettes representing the 5th and 50th female and 95th male percentiles to define dimensions and adjustability. In the final design, we prioritized simple form and ease of adjustment. The wood-and-metal construction was chosen to harmonize with home interiors, echoing furniture aesthetics.
Qué lo hace diferente
Power is designed with user comfort as a top priority. This is achieved primarily through the use of power banks for energy storage, allowing users to access the generated power whenever and wherever they need it. Comfort is also enhanced by the ability to adjust the riding position to individual preferences, as well as by the device’s aesthetic—carefully crafted to blend seamlessly into the home environment. With its furniture-like appearance, Power feels more like a natural part of the interior than a typical piece of exercise equipment.
Planes para el futuro
Our next steps will focus on building a full-scale 1:1 prototype and conducting research on the efficiency of the charging system. However, these efforts require significant financial resources and access to appropriate technical facilities. Further development of the project also includes adapting the trainer to create comfortable conditions for combining physical activity with intellectual tasks—such as remote work, online learning, or relaxing with an e-book. This will be made possible through integration with a laptop, tablet, or smartphone.
