UDO - Unkown Driving Object

UDO is a mobile micro-architecture that redefines temporary living and working with sustainable materials, modular design, and off-grid capabilities.

Was es macht

UDO is a mobile unit for flexible living and working, built almost entirely from sustainable and recycled materials like wood and reused aluminum. With modular features and off-grid energy, it enables sustainable use wherever temporary space is needed.

Deine Inspiration

The idea for UDO emerged from a desire to rethink mobile space beyond plastic and mass production. Influenced by the need for sustainable alternatives to resource-intensive RVs, UDO aims to create spaces that support temporary, self-sufficient lifestyles and various use-cases. It also reflects a growing demand for modular, creative environments that foster community, especially in transitional contexts or locations lacking infrastructure.

So funktioniert es

UDO is a CNC-optimized wooden structure with integrated telescopic columns, allowing it to be lifted on and off a transporter without additional tools. The ventilated façade is made from reused aluminum offset printing plates, while insulation and interior elements are built from wood and soft wood fiber. Polycarbonate side panels ensure light-filled interiors with privacy. Inside, UDO can accommodate either frames for 90 cm / 140 cm mattresses combined with plenty of storage, or seating for up to 8 people. integrated lighting, sockets, and USB ports are powered by a rechargeable battery charged via vehicle or PV modules. Once unloaded, the transporter is free for other tasks, allowing a single vehicle to move multiple units.

Designprozess

The design process began with form-finding and ideation sketches. Since UDO is meant to function both freestanding and mounted on a vehicle or trailer, its shape was developed to look balanced and intentional in both contexts. The minimalistic interior was designed to adapt to various scenarios—living, working, or relaxing—offering maximum flexibility in a compact footprint. The cantilevered sides are set at perfect seating height and provide space for up to 8 people. The CNC-optimized base frame allows scalable, customizable construction for a wide range of user needs and transport systems. A key objective was to create a unique spatial experience: light-filled, open, and surprisingly spacious for a mobile unit. The oversized rear door doubles as a canopy, creating an inviting entrance and sheltered outdoor space. Unlike comparable detachable cabins, which rely on costly and clunky lifting systems, UDO uses repurposed construction supports as integral design elements. These telescopic legs not only enable easy loading/unloading but also become part of the interior, serving as mounts for the lighting system.

Warum es anders ist

Unlike traditional mobile homes made from plastic-heavy non recycable composites, UDO is built from almost entirely reused and recyclable materials. It offers more than just mobility: its telescopic leg system allows fast, tool-free unloading; its modular interior adapts to various uses; and its daylight-focused design creates a high-quality space experience. UDO separates itself from typical camper culture by rejecting RV conventions in favor of low-impact, flexible design. It enables shared use through potential rent/share models, requiring fewer vehicles to serve more people. This approach, combined with a high level of design detail and environmental consciousness, sets UDO apart as a truly forward-thinking mobile space.

Pläne für die Zukunft

The current prototype has been tested in various use cases including as a tiny house, bar, DJ booth, work space and storage unit. Minor improvements were identified during testing. The next major goal is to further streamline and simplify the construction process to reduce both building time and costs. In addition, further development of modular features, integrated PV options and partnerships for pilot applications in urban or rural settings are being explored.
