What it does
Syrupii is a manual liquid medication dispenser that improves accuracy and ease at home. It reduces spillage and discomfort from using spoons or syringes, offering a hygienic, controlled way to take the right dose confidently.
Your inspiration
The idea for Syrupii was inspired by the frequent difficulties individuals face when dispensing liquid medications at home. Inconsistent doses, spills, and lack of hygiene are common issues, especially for users with limited dexterity or visual impairments. After analysing these problems, our team identified a need for a simple, mechanical solution that improves the user experience while reducing the risk of underdosing or overdosing. The goal was to develop a product that empowers users to take medication safely and independently.
How it works
Operating Syrupii is intuitive and precise. The user begins by rotating the plunger to select the desired dose, aligning one of the quarter-volume markings with a fixed triangular stopper — ensuring accurate, repeatable measurement. Once the volume is set, the user pulls the plunger upward, just like a traditional syringe, drawing the exact amount of liquid medication from the attached bottle. Pressing the plunger downward then smoothly dispenses the dose with minimal effort. This three-step process delivers consistent, spill-free dosing in a way that is both user-friendly and reliable, all without the need for electronics or complex mechanics.
Design process
Following the Design Thinking process, Syrupii's development progressed through five key stages. We began by Empathising with users, interviewing them and researching home medication habits to identify issues like inaccurate dosing, spills, and accessibility. This led to the Define stage, where we focused our problem statement on creating a simple, hygienic, and accurate liquid medication dispenser for everyone. During Ideate, we explored various concepts, ultimately selecting a syringe-inspired plunger system with adjustable volume control for its ease of use and precision. Our first 3D-printed Prototype allowed us to test ergonomics and dosing accuracy, leading to refinements like a rotating plunger, quarter-volume markings, and a triangular stopper for consistent dosing. Finally, through rigorous Testing involving fluid and usability evaluations, we improved sealing, grip, and compatibility with standard bottles based on valuable user feedback. This iterative, user-centered approach ensured Syrupii was both functional and intuitive, evolving from initial concept to the refined fourth prototype.
How it is different
Syrupii stands out for its simplicity, precision, and user-centered design. Unlike traditional spoons or syringes, it features a rotating plunger with fixed volume settings, allowing users to pre-select and dispense accurate doses every time. Its mechanical, non-electric operation makes it reliable, low-cost, and accessible to all age groups. The sealed system minimises contamination and spillage, while the intuitive interface ensures ease of use—no batteries, no confusion, just consistent, mess-free dosing.
Future plans
We aim to refine Syrupii’s design to further enhance stability, portability, and user convenience. Improvements include increasing airtightness and widening the base to ensure greater balance and prevent tipping during use. A dedicated storage unit will be introduced to keep the device and accessories neatly organised and easy to store. Additionally, future iterations will feature a sleeker, more ergonomic shape—reducing bulk while improving comfort, handling, and visual appeal.
