What it does

LungMate is a portable home pulmonary rehab aid. It solves the lack of real-time feedback and professional monitoring in at-home respiratory training, offering intelligent analysis, intuitive data display, and remote monitoring for elderly & lung patients.

Your inspiration

The idea stemmed from the challenges of at-home pulmonary rehabilitation, where users lack access to real-time feedback and professional guidance. High-cost medical equipment and complex interfaces further limit accessibility. LungMate integrates affordable sensors, ergonomic design, and AI-driven analysis to bridge this gap, inspired by the need for compact, user-friendly solutions that empower patients to manage their rehab independently while staying connected to caregivers.

How it works

LungMate combines a medical-grade silicone mask with embedded high-sensitivity sensors to monitor respiratory airflow, temperature, and humidity. Data is transmitted via a durable corrugated tube to a main control unit with an MCU chip, which analyzes lung function in real time. Results are displayed on an OLED screen (e.g., respiratory rate, tidal volume). The system uses AI to detect potential lung issues and provides voice-guided training. For remote care, wireless syncing allows doctors/family to track progress and adjust plans. The transparent mask ensures a secure fit for diverse facial structures, while intuitive buttons simplify operation.

Design process

The prototype features a 3D-printed mask frame with silicone sealing, modular sensors, and a microcontroller for data processing. Initial tests revealed airflow resistance in the tube, prompting a redesign with higher elasticity. The OLED interface was refined for better readability, and button responsiveness was improved for elderly users. Future iterations will focus on: Miniaturization: Reducing the main unit’s size for portability. AI Enhancements: Expanding disease detection algorithms with clinical data. Battery Life: Optimizing power consumption for longer use. Material Upgrades: Using hypoallergenic silicone for broader usability. User feedback highlighted the need for multilingual voice guidance, which will be added in the next version.

How it is different

LungMate stands out by merging professional-grade accuracy with home-use simplicity. Unlike bulky hospital devices, it’s compact and affordable. Competitors lack real-time AI feedback or remote monitoring, while LungMate’s dynamic OLED display and wireless data sharing enable proactive care. The ergonomic mask design ensures universal comfort, and voice guidance caters to elderly users—addressing gaps in accessibility and usability. Its AI-driven early detection feature further distinguishes it as a preventive tool, not just a rehab aid.

Future plans

Next, LungMate will pursue clinical trials to validate its AI models and accuracy. Partnerships with pulmonologists will refine disease-detection algorithms. Plans include: Integration with telehealth platforms for seamless doctor-patient communication. Expanding sensor capabilities to monitor blood oxygen levels. Commercialization: Targeting home healthcare markets with FDA/CE certification. Long-term, the design could adapt for COPD and asthma management, leveraging cloud AI for personalized rehab plans.
