What it does
GripAid helps elderly individuals, stroke survivors, and persons with disabilities (PWDs) move safely and retrieve objects without bending or relying on others to address the lack of affordable, multifunctional mobility aids in the Philippine market.
Your inspiration
This project was inspired by the observed struggles of elderly and mobility-challenged Filipinos who depend on separate, often expensive tools to perform simple tasks like walking or picking up objects. Personal stories, caregiver interviews, and gaps in current market offerings motivated us to design a practical all-in-one device that promotes independence, dignity, and safety.
How it works
GripAid combines three core components into one lightweight, foldable device: a height-adjustable aluminum walking cane, a four-pronged mechanical grabber activated by dual push buttons, and a front-facing 1W LED flashlight powered by a rechargeable lithium-ion battery. The user operates the grabber using thumb-accessible controls located on the ergonomic handle, enabling easy retrieval of items without bending. All components are housed in a streamlined structure that meets ergonomic standards and is designed for mass production using just-in-time inventory and modular assembly techniques.
Design process
The project began with market research and survey data to identify user needs, followed by competitive benchmarking. Early prototypes focused on integrating core mobility and object retrieval into a single device. Material selection prioritized durability and weight reduction, using aluminum shafts and rubber grips. Technical specifications were refined through a series of user-centered tests, and a scalable production system was developed around five sequential manufacturing stages. Iterative feedback informed cost-optimization and foldability features. The result is a minimum viable product designed for manufacturability, usability, and long-term value.
How it is different
Unlike existing products that require users to carry separate grabbers and canes or hybrid devices that compromise usability. GripAid uniquely offers an integrated, automatic grabber, a rechargeable flashlight, and a foldable frame in a single ergonomic tool priced competitively at ₱2,500. No other product on the market delivers this specific combination of features with user-focused design, local affordability, and scalability, making it both patentable and socially impactful.
Future plans
Our next steps include completing regulatory compliance (e.g., FDA certification), filing patents, and launching small-batch production in Metro Manila and CALABARZON. We aim to expand through online platforms like Shopee and Lazada, while pursuing clinic partnerships and government subsidy programs. Long-term plans involve adding smart features (e.g., fall detection), exploring export opportunities, and transitioning to more sustainable materials, aligning with both market needs and environmental goals.
