What it does
DentMap is a home intelligent oral scanner that addresses the inconvenience of regular oral check-ups. It uses advanced optical sectioning technology with multiple fine laser beams to scan the oral cavity,
Your inspiration
The inspiration comes from the common problem that people often neglect oral health due to the inconvenience of going to the dentist regularly. Many oral diseases are discovered at a late stage, leading to higher treatment costs and more complex procedures. By developing DentMap, we aim to empower individuals to take control of their oral health by enabling easy and frequent self-checks at home. The idea of using optical sectioning technology is inspired by its precision in medical imaging, which can provide detailed and accurate oral data, making early detection and prevention of oral diseases possible.
How it works
DentMap utilizes advanced optical sectioning technology. Multiple fine laser beams are emitted into the oral cavity, and when they encounter oral tissues, the laser light is reflected at different intensities and wavelengths according to the characteristics of tissues at various depths. The scanner precisely captures these reflected lights, and through complex algorithms and image processing techniques, it constructs a highly detailed 3D model of the oral cavity. This 3D model is then transmitted to the paired mobile APP, where users can view the condition of their teeth, gums, and other oral structures from multiple angles in real-time. The APP also has functions for data analysis, such as detecting potential caries or gum problems, and can generate health reports. Users can share these reports with dentists online for professional advice.
Design process
The design process began with in-depth market research to identify the pain points in current oral health management. I explored various technologies to meet the requirements and ultimately decided on optical sectioning technology. I upgraded the laser source to a more precise one and refined the image capture and processing algorithms. Through multiple rounds of testing and optimization, I enhanced the scanner's performance, improving scanning speed, increasing the resolution of the 3D model, and strengthening data transmission stability. Regarding the mobile APP, I devised a comprehensive system facilitating seamless integration between home self-checks and online medical services. After users complete oral scans at home with the scanner
How it is different
What makes DentMap unique is its combination of advanced optical sectioning technology and user-friendly design. Unlike traditional oral scanners that are mainly used in dental clinics, DentMap is designed specifically for home use, making oral health monitoring more accessible and convenient. Its high-precision 3D modeling ability provides detailed oral data, which is comparable to professional clinical equipment. Moreover, the seamless integration with the mobile APP enables real-time data viewing and online diagnosis, breaking the time and space limitations of traditional oral examinations. The ability to conduct frequent self-checks at home also allows for earlier detection of oral problems, reducing the likelihood of severe oral diseases.
Future plans
In the future, we plan to further improve the accuracy and speed of DentMap by integrating more advanced sensor technologies. We also aim to expand its functionality, such as adding functions for personalized oral care recommendations based on users' oral health data. Additionally, we will explore partnerships with dental institutions to establish a more comprehensive online diagnosis and treatment platform, enabling more professional and efficient communication between users and dentists.
