Over the past 20 years, wildfires have more than doubled in frequency and intensity, with the last seven years setting record highs. As wildfires grow more frequent and severe, I realized that monitoring or post-response alone has clear limitations. Most current fire response systems require electricity, costly equipment, or extensive maintenance, limiting accessibility. To address this, I developed a simple, power-free early-response device that anyone can install, focusing on a straightforward operating principle and cost-effective production for practical use.

Wildfires tend to spread along the ground, so the WPD’s fire detection and trigger are placed at the bottom. When a certain temperature is detected, the wax trigger (melting point 63–90°C) activates and, using the restoring force of a compressed spring, pushes out the extinguishing fluid (water) stored inside without power. The top has a canopy to prevent malfunction from sunlight. Since it is left in the mountains, all prototype materials (except the trigger, spring, and fluid) are made with eco-friendly 3D-printed filament.

In the initial stage, the operating principle using a spring’s restoring force was conceptualized, and the mechanism, including a temperature-activated trigger, was 3D modeled for printing. The process: temperature rises → trigger releases → spring expands → extinguishing agent is discharged. Components include the spring fixing plate, dispersion structure, agent container, upper spring plate, and trigger fixing plate. The 1L prototype’s fluid velocity was simulated (Fusion360), showing a discharge speed of 4.2–4.4 m/s (11× device height). The dispersion structure was improved by adjusting spray angles and outlets. All parts were made from eco-friendly PLA, with strength and function verified via simulation and prototype testing.

The goals were to create a device that "anyone can easily install," "can operate without electricity or piping," and "is low-cost and suitable for mass deployment." To achieve this, the WPD uses a simple physical mechanism—without electronic components or complex circuits—where a compressed spring is triggered to release the extinguishing agent when the critical temperature is reached. The device consists of easily manufactured and assembled parts such as the dispersion structure, extinguishing agent container, spring fixing plate, and trigger. Its compact 1L design increases portability and versatility, making it suitable for forests, homes, warehouses, restaurants, and other indoor spaces. Unlike most existing devices that rely on fixed infrastructure, power-based automation, or external equipment like drones and helicopters, the WPD operates as a standalone installation, ensuring simplicity and ease of use.
Plans pour l'avenir
The WPD is currently intended for early wildfire suppression outdoors, but future plans include making it smaller and more stable for use in homes and other indoor spaces. The goal is to ensure reliable operation in various environments and to expand its applications. While the prototype uses PLA, the device will eventually use more durable and eco-friendly materials like biodegradable composites or non-toxic polymers.
