We noticed young children love playing with bath toys, but most are plastic, moldy, and lack educational value. At the same time, news of endangered marine species and ocean pollution deeply moved us. We wanted to create a toy that’s safe, clean, and meaningful—letting kids feel marine life’s fragility and inspiring them to care for the ocean while they play.

Bath Buddy toys are made of food-grade, biodegradable foam using gelatin, glycerin, and bubbles. We heat and mix the ingredients, pour them into molds of marine creatures, and dry them into sponge-like toys. When placed in warm water, they float, expand slightly, and dissolve over about 20 minutes—symbolizing marine vulnerability while also signaling bath time’s end. Each toy includes a collectible card with facts and a QR code for more learning.

Processus de conception

We started by observing children’s bath habits, interviewing parents, and identifying pain points: plastic toys harbor bacteria, lack meaning, and lead to overly long baths. We experimented with biodegradable, food-safe materials to create foam that floats, dissolves in ~20 minutes, and feels pleasant to touch. We tested many prototypes to optimize texture, buoyancy, and durability. Designs evolved from simple shapes to detailed endangered marine creatures. We also designed collectible cards with colorful facts and QR codes to connect offline play with online learning.

Bath Buddy uniquely combines play, education, and sustainability. Unlike plastic toys, it’s clean, single-use, and biodegradable. Its dissolving form teaches kids about the fragility of marine life, while helping parents control bath duration. The cards and QR codes extend the learning experience beyond the bath. No other bath toy combines hygiene, eco-friendliness, and meaningful education in such an engaging way.

Plans pour l'avenir

We aim to expand the series with more species and card designs, improve the material for better durability and aesthetics, and fine-tune dissolving time. Next, we plan to file patents, conduct more user testing, and collaborate with sustainable manufacturers to bring Bath Buddy to market globally as a fun, educational, and eco-conscious bath toy.
