What It Does

Clothes de-wrinkle machine is a system embedded in a wardrobe that will automate the process of clothes ironing. The users could just pick the clothes they want from the wardrobe and put on them without having to iron them every time they want to wear.

The Inspiration

Since young, wearing a uniform to school is a must. Due to the busy schedule that my parents had, every weekend my brother and I have to help out with chores at home and the one that we hated the most is clothes ironing. The process is very messy, tedious and hot. We spend almost half a day ironing all the clothes that are needed for a week for the whole family. Besides, the problem is not only in my family but in others as well. Parents are busy working on the weekdays and do not have time and energy to do the task after work. This inspires me to look for solutions that will speed up or completely remove the process of clothes ironing.

How It Works

The wardrobe comes with 3 compartments. On the first compartment, clothes that need to be ironed are hung inside the wardrobe. The messy clothes will then be transferred to the second compartment to be steamed and ironed. There will be mechanisms inside the working compartment to clip and grab on the clothes to apply force and tension to the fabric. After tension is applied to the garment, steam is then ejected on to the garment to smoothen out the wrinkles. After the de-wrinkle process is complete, the garment is transferred to the third compartment. The system will detect the completion of a cycle and repeat the process until the first compartment is empty. The user only has to hang the clothes on a special design hanger and place the messy clothing into the wardrobe like they usually do at home. The whole system allows the user to pick and put on the clothes they want without having to worry about the wrinkles that are on the garment.

Stages of Development

The objective of the solution is to make it simple to use so that users with no technical knowledge can operate. This leads to the furniture that we usually store all our clothing, the wardrobe. Several sketches are converted to simple prototypes to test and validate the ideas. The prototypes are constructed using cardboard, PVC pipes, rubber bands and clips. Countless sketches and ideas do not work as the complexity of the mechanisms and system are too complex and not reliable. The challenge in the design process is to grab on the flexible clothes that will be swaying most of the time. Inspired by how clothing looks the best when they are worn, a special design hanger is fabricated. The extended part of the hanger is to open up the shoulder are to make the clothes more fixed and neat. This enables the design of the mechanisms to be simplified and enable them to grab on the clothing. The process of removing wrinkles are also studied in detail to choose the best way to remove them. Steaming process is chosen as the method is more flexible and gentle to the garment. After the cardboard prototype looks reliable. A more rigid prototype with actuators and electronic system is fabricated as the next stage to further test out the idea.


There are already some solutions that speed up the process of clothes ironing but the set up process is too tedious. Some ideas need to users to put on the clothes on a model and tied them down on few anchor to apply tension to the garment. Hot air is injected to expand the model and induce heat to the garment. The whole process is messy although it helps in the speed of the process. The more efficient systems are used in industries. But the process requires trained individuals to operate the machine. The design of the machine is also not suitable for household appliances. The systems are also highly hazardous as they used high-pressure steam that will be ejected from the machine. The system that is developed is an automated system that will complete the task. The user only needs to hang the clothes as usual and the rest will be handled by the system.

Future Plans

The result from the prototype proves that the system can de-wrinkle clothing. But the design and the structure is too bulky. The efficiency of the system is not good enough to meet the standard of wrinkle free clothes. Furthermore, the current prototype could only de-wrinkle formal clothes. The system also needs to recognize different types of clothing to grab on them. There are many upgrades needed in the idea. The next focus on the idea will be reducing the size, complexity, and efficiency of the mechanisms. The software of the system should be able to detect and identify different types of clothing and handle them effectively.
