The bicycle sharing system for smart cities

The idea arose from the reflexion on how to take advantage of the wasted energy, and especially from the citizens energy, this is why it hasn't had importance until now. Apart from that, the tendency for the population growth and the urbanisation are a great opportunity to generate energy and to make our cities more efficient and healthy to live in.

Anyway, to reach the final idea the problem was analyzed in depth. For this reason a lot of different problems were analyzed around the energy consumption in the city. Besides, there were analyzed trends in that field. The conclusion was that the ecological impact and economic expenses caused by the street lighting it was considerable, and a lot more in megacities. In addition, the trend towards the collective mobility and the use of the bicycle is clear and nowadays it is essential for big cities to offer a bike sharing service as an alternative transport. Thousands of people commute every day to work, making short distances by the public bicycle sharing system.

We identified the opportunity in the creation of a product/ system integrated into the bicycle sharing system which stores the electric energy generated by the users while pedalling, with the aim of using it at the public lighting and reducing the emissions and the economic expenses, and benefiting all community.

The main objective of the system is to take advantage of citizen’s energy, being the bike sharing systems of the big cities a unique opportunity to achieve this goal.

The energy generated by thousands of commuters and tourists that use the service in the big cities is stored by Bikonnect in order to use it during the night in public lighting, reducing economic and energetic expenses.

The system is divided in two main parts, on the one hand the bicycle cage and on the other the lamppost/station. The cage stores the generated energy by a hub dynamo in its own battery. When the user finish the journey the energy is transferred to the main battery that is located in the station. In cities as Barcelona the energy generated by users would provide an autonomy of the 135% to a station of 8 bikes, being the configuration of the station customizable.

At night the lamppost switches on by a twilight switch and starts consuming the energy from the principal battery. In the case that the battery is empty the lamppost will use the energy from the electricity distribution network.

The station panel simplify the renting process and informs user of how to take the bicycle, taking into account its battery and its condition. The user is awarded with a discount on the bill depending on how much energy has produced.

The process has been iterative, at first until we discover the best opportunity and then while whole design process.

The problem was analyzed in depth by contextual observations, exploring trends, market research, etc. Firstly, we ideated the design of the service, because the product will be the touchpoint that makes a net of illuminated stations distributed throughout the city. In order to visualize a positive user experience a few storyboards and a customer journey map were made.

Once the main objectives of the service had been established, the product (the station and the case) became more important in the process. The electric analysis was important to calculate the approximate autonomy of the system. For this purpose, the statistical research of bike sharing systems usage habits around the world had been crucial.

In the conceptualization phase the divergence and the convergence were constant; during the process a large number of concepts were created.

At the same time fast prototypes were created in order to choose the best distribution of the station. Prototypes of the control panel were also created with the aim of guaranteeing an intuitive interaction with the service. On the other hand volumetric prototypes were created to dimension the products.

The best concepts were selected, in relation with the established technical and usage requirements and also with the trend board, created as an aesthetical guide.

The development process consisted of selecting the commercial elements and dimensioning the products, taking into account the anthropometric measures, lighting angles and the dimensions of the bikes.
