Ce qu'il fait
During flood and emergency situations, access to adequate sanitation can be very limited. So we designed the Meridian PTS, or Portable Toilet Solution, to be a low cost squatting toilet, that is easy to ship and can be quickly assembled or removed.
Votre source d'inspiration
All across the world during flood situations, many people lack access to adequate sanitation. So we focused our design on to be low cost, easy to use, and be easily deployable. The UNHCR’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals recognise that access to clean water and sanitation is critical for humanity. Which helped us focused our research and lead us to the fact that only 4% of residents in Jakarta have access to adequate sanitation year round. While there are other compact portable toilets on the market, their consideration for privacy and odour prevention are poor, few are squatting style, and none had facilities for hand washing.
Comment ça marche
The PTS is designed to be a squatting toilet, as the target demographic was Asia. It diverts the liquid and solid waste to reduce the odour released. The split system also aids in the removal of the solid and liquid waste, each waste can be disposed of separately when at max capacity. We also designed a screen to give them the privacy they deserve. The privacy screen also doubles as the packaging for the toilet during transport to and from destinations. With all the components to the toilet can fitting inside of the toilet body itself.
Processus de conception
We began the development process with initial ideation, using techniques such as braining storming to come up with as many ideas as possible. After this each team member selected their favourite concept and we then chose the idea that would become the PTS. Design refinement and 1:1 scale prototype testing followed, which allowed us the ability to test ergonomics, optimal sizing, and the aesthetics of the design. We created a number of prototypes, with each iteration getting closer to the final design. We then detailed the design in CAD and tested our assumptions of strength with the use of FEA. Finally we compiled a report and created the final visuals for the project.
En quoi est-il différent ?
The PTS's main novel features are: -Its 'squatting style' waste diversion system, ensures that solid and liquid waste are kept separate. This reduces odour and makes storage and disposal much easier, -It provides access to adequate sanitation during flood and other emergency situations, -The entire system comes packaged within its own privacy screen, thus eliminating excess packaging materials, -The inclusion of a hand basin promotes cleanliness and is a differentiating factor from other competitor products, -Its low cost and low cost of use make it ideal for mass deployment for those in low socio-economic settings, -While the PTS's main use case is during emergency situations, it can be used year round for those who lack access to adequate sanitation, in an every day setting.
Plans pour l'avenir
The Meridian PTS began as a University team project and in the future, we would like to see it be further refined for production. And eventually have it deployed around the would for disaster relief by various aid originations.
