¿Qué hace?

LUCIR is a smart cutting boards that allow low vision patients to cook safely through changing the color of the surface. The surface color is changed to the contrast color of the object that has sufficient contrast to make objects visible.

Inspiración

A few years ago, I lived in Tsukuba city where Tsukuba University of Technology (NTUT) (the only educational institute for the hearing impaired and visually impaired in Japan) is located. Therefore, I met lots of visually disabled people including low vision patients and noticed that they faced many difficulties when cooking. Some age-related low-vision conditions include glaucoma, cataract or diabetic retinopathy also have visual complaint due to reduced sensitivity to contrast. They already purposefully considered and built color contrast into their environment. I thought it would be helpful if they could use color contrast for cooking.

¿Cómo funciona?

The upper webcam detects the color of the objects on the cutting board. The detected color of the object is stored as an RGB value. The most contrasting color is calculated based on the RGB values.
For confirmation, when the user touches the front side (it embeds ultrasonic sensor), the color of the cutting boards surface changes.

The built-in LED (under the cutting board surface) changes the color of the surface. RGB color space constructs all the colors from the combination of the Red, Green and Blue colors. The red, green and blue use 8 bits each, which have integer values from 0 to 255. This makes 256*256*256=16777216 possible colors. Therefore, even if the same object is placed, the surface color changes according to the kitchen lighting and the degree of ripening (fruit, vegetables).

First, I considered safe cooking techniques for Cooks who are a visually impaired person or have low vision. I noticed that two important factors for safe cooking.
-Task lighting increases visibility: Ambient and accent lighting (such as over kitchen counters) increase a person’s ability to function.
-Color contrast is important to make objects visible. Like colors cause objects or their features to blend in and become invisible to the low vision eye. Many people will purposefully consider and build color contrast into their environment: black coffee is more easily seen in a white cup.

In order to obtain advice, I visited the Federation of Low Vision patients (South Korea). After meeting with the president, I noticed that color contrast actually helps cooking safety. However, there are few products using color contrast for visually impaired people in the market.
At the meeting, I prepared mock-up model. They told me the strong light is inappropriate for photophobia who have chronic light sensitivity.
Therefore, I considered a structure that could dim the light. In the final model, for corners are embossed to help distinction.
