What it does
WallIt is an intelligent prefabricated wall that transforms energy-inefficient buildings into efficient, connected structures by integrating insulation and sensors. It solves the problem of slow and costly retrofits with a fast and circular solution.
Your inspiration
The idea came from directly observing the condition of Italy’s building stock: millions of outdated, energy-hungry structures that are often impossible to retrofit using traditional methods due to economic, technical, or social constraints. I asked myself: what if a wall could do more than just “close off” a space? What if it could improve comfort, reduce energy consumption, generate power, and make a home smart? That’s how WallIt was born — a system designed to turn retrofit into a simple, scalable, and circular action.
How it works
WallIt is a prefabricated wall module with an integrated window, designed to be quickly installed on the envelope of both existing and new buildings without invasive construction work. Each unit is made from circular economy materials and combines multiple functions into a single element: high-performance insulation, environmental sensors, and various optional features chosen by the client, including different surface finishes. The wall communicates in real time with both the indoor and outdoor environment, enabling the building to become smart through a range of connected functions. The system is modular and scalable, adaptable to different types of buildings, and installed off-site, reducing time and cost. WallIt is not just a building component—it is an intelligent infrastructure for the circular transition of the built environment.
Design process
The project began by closely observing the building stock in Italy and other European countries, focusing on outdated structures that are difficult to retrofit. The goal was to develop a modular, scalable solution adaptable to different contexts. We started by evaluating various materials based on their level of circularity, durability, and end-of-life reusability. Once the vision was defined, we created the first BIM models to simulate the wall's behavior in different scenarios and climates. Through thermal and environmental simulations, we optimized the thickness and composition of the wall system, balancing efficiency, weight, and ease of transport. At the same time, we tested multiple mounting and fastening methods to identify the quickest and safest installation approach, minimizing time and risks on site. We then focused on defining the integrated sensor system. Today, we have a fully functional prototype ready for real-world façade testing. The system is mature and market-ready, designed to be upgradable and customizable based on user needs and the specific building context.
How it is different
WallIt stands out from all current market solutions for three main reasons. It is the first prefabricated wall made entirely from circular materials, designed to be fully disassembled at the end of its life, with each component reintroduced into a new production cycle. It integrates environmental sensors and smart technologies that can make even existing buildings intelligent, optimizing comfort, energy consumption, and air quality. It's not just a wall — it's a connected intelligent infrastructure. The system is customizable, both in terms of surface finishes and functional components, allowing it to adapt to different aesthetic, technical, or climatic needs. Moreover, thanks to its off-site modularity and fast installation, WallIt is quicker, less invasive, and more sustainable than traditional retrofit solutions. It is a sustainable and scalable system.
Future plans
The next steps include installing the first prototype on a real building to test its performance in operational conditions. At the same time, we are developing a digital configurator to customize the modules based on the building type and user needs. Our goal is to industrialize the product, establish partnerships with companies and public institutions, and offer WallIt as a scalable, accessible, and high-impact retrofit service. We aim to contribute concretely to the ecological transition of the existing building stock.
