Socks Aid StepEasy

The StepEasy is an innovative 2-in-1 sock aid and walking stick that empowers individuals with limited mobility to independently wear socks and enhancing their daily independence.

What it does

The StepEasy sock aid helps individuals with limited mobility independently put on socks, solving the challenge of bending and improving daily independence with its ergonomic, portable, and durable 2-in-1 design that also functions as a walking stick.

Your inspiration

We decided to solve this problem after observing the daily struggles of elderly family members and others with limited mobility trying to put on socks independently. It was clear current aids fell short, causing frustration and dependence. The idea for StepEasy emerged from a desire to create a truly empowering tool. We envisioned a device that didn't just assist but integrated seamlessly into daily life. The 2-in-1 concept that combines a sock aid with a walking stick was born from the need for ultimate convenience and multi-purpose utility to significantly boost user independence and dignity.

How it works

The StepEasy is a 2-in-1 sock aid and walking stick for those with limited mobility. It helps you independently put on socks without bending. Made of lightweight aluminum and flexible TPU thus it's durable and easy to use. Simply slide your sock onto its base, insert your foot, and pull up. It seamlessly converts into a sturdy walking stick and helps boost independence and convenience.

Design process

The design process began by identifying the problem of independent sock-donning for people with limited mobility. Initial concepts were generated using a morphological chart. The first prototype was built using PVC pipe. Improvements from this early stage were significant: material changed from PVC to durable, lightweight aluminum and flexible TPU for the base. The design evolved into a 2-in-1 device, combining a sock aid with an adjustable-length walking stick. An ergonomic handle, and an interlocking foldable design were integrated for enhanced user experience, portability, and robustness. This iterative process led to the current "StepEasy" design.

How it is different

The StepEasy socks aid stands out by uniquely combining a sock-donning device with an adjustable walking stick. Unlike many similar products that are often bulky, lack ergonomic comfort, or struggle with various sock types, StepEasy offers a superior solution. Its uniqueness lies in its dual functionality that provide both sock aid and mobility support. It boasts universal compatibility and designed to work effectively with any sock type. It was crafted from lightweight aluminum and flexible TPU, its ergonomic handle and innovative foldable structure make it highly comfortable, durable, and easy to store or travel with. This integration delivers unparallel convenience and independence.

Future plans

Next steps involve advanced material research for lighter, stronger versions, and integrating smart features like pressure sensors for gait analysis when used as a walking stick. We'll focus on continuous user testing to refine ergonomics and functionality.

Awards

Our design won the 10th place at the Innovation and Design Exhibition 2025 (IDEX’25) hosted by Mechanical Engineering Student Association (MESA) at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. The judge consists of local Dyson Engineers that provided constructive feedback and evaluation.
