What it does
SharkSense is a biomimetic gaming headset designed to enhance immersion. By integrating vibration motors, it transforms in-game audio cues into physical sensations, helping players better perceive battlefield dynamics and improving spatial awareness.
Your inspiration
I wanted to break the limits of traditional gaming headsets, which only deliver sound but lack physical feedback. Inspired by the shark’s acute sensory system, I designed SharkSense to let players not only hear but physically feel the game world.
How it works
SharkSense works like this: when you play a game, the headset picks up important sounds—like explosions or enemy footsteps—and turns them into gentle vibrations you can feel on your head. Inside the headset, small vibration motors move in sync with the sound. This makes you feel closer to the action, as if the battle is happening all around you, not just in your ears. The shark-inspired shape also fits closely to your head, helping the vibrations and sound feel more connected and powerful.
Design process
The design process of SharkSense started with a simple question: how can we make players feel more connected to the game? I looked to nature for inspiration, focusing on sharks, which use their bodies to sense vibrations in their environment. I wanted the headset to reflect this both in appearance and function. First, I sketched out ideas combining the aerodynamic shape of a shark with a comfortable headset design. I created a rough prototype using 3D-printed shells and a standard speaker headset, adding simple vibration motors that responded to game audio. While this prototype proved the idea could work, the vibrations were too weak and unevenly distributed. In the next stage, I redesigned the internal structure to house multiple vibration motors in key areas around the ears. I built a custom circuit to better control when and how strongly each motor activates, allowing the headset to react differently to explosions, gunfire, or approaching footsteps. I also improved the external design, refining the shark-like curves and smoothing out the surface for comfort. Through testing with gamers, I adjusted motor placement and improved the fit and materials, resulting in a lightweight, immersive headset that lets players feel the game like never before.

SharkSense stands out by combining a striking shark-inspired design with advanced haptic feedback technology. Unlike traditional gaming headsets that only deliver sound, SharkSense uses multiple vibration motors strategically placed to convert in-game audio into physical sensations. This creates a deeper level of immersion, letting players truly feel the battlefield. Its biomimetic form not only enhances aesthetics but also improves comfort and vibration transmission, setting it apart from other products that lack such integrated sensory experiences.
Future plans
The next step in developing SharkSense is to refine the vibration feedback system by incorporating more precise sensors that can differentiate between various in-game events for more accurate and nuanced haptic responses. I also plan to improve wireless connectivity and battery life to enhance user convenience. In the future, I aim to integrate customizable settings, allowing players to tailor the intensity and patterns of vibrations to their preferences, and explore partnerships with game developers to create deeper audio-haptic integration for a truly immersive gaming experience.
