What it does
This service uses a beam projector to help those with memory loss or early dementia follow daily routines. It supports schedule recognition, encourages routine practice, and eases emotional strain and caregiver burden.
Your inspiration
The idea came to mind while observing family members who often miss the flow of daily life due to poor memory. Smartphones and existing digital devices were small and complex and often confused, and I felt that a fundamental change in approach was necessary as I saw that the practice was not done well despite repeated guidance on the schedule. I thought that a more intuitive and sensuous routine guidance tool was essential in that failure to restore autonomy and initiative in daily life intensifies feelings of lethargy and eventually passes on to the guardian.
How it works
The app UI allows guardians or users to set their own routines, and the set schedules are projected through a beam projector to large spaces such as walls and ceilings to provide visually clear and intuitive routine guidance. The schedules switch automatically over time, and are designed to allow users to naturally recognize and practice schedules without any need for separate manipulation. In addition, at the end of the day, the app allows you to summarize your daily activities and write a brief retrospective, helping users form habits to reflect on themselves and enable gradual routine improvements. Through this process, users can restore their initiative and self-efficacy in daily life and maintain a sense of emotional stability. In addition, guardians can check whether the routine is practiced and the contents of the retrospective in real time, allowing them to continue caring indirectly without direct intervention and reducing the overall burden of caring.
Design process
This work was started to help those who miss their daily routines due to memory loss or early dementia symptoms. We established problems by observing and interviewing people around us who were suffering from memory loss or early dementia symptoms. In this process, we recognized the problem that the existing smartphone schedule management tool was rather confusing due to the complex and small screen, and decided that a more intuitive and sensuous solution was needed. Therefore, we came up with the idea of a beam projector-based routine guidance service using space, and developed an app UI so that users can easily set their routines so that guardians or themselves can create their own schedules. Through user tests, visual elements and interfaces have been continuously improved, and in the future, we plan to increase convenience and effectiveness by adding voice guidance, automatically executing sensor interworking, and strengthening real-time communication with guardians. Through this, users are expected to restore their self-direction in daily life, gain emotional stability, and reduce the burden of caring for their guardians.
How it is different
Unlike small screen-based schedule management such as smartphones, this work is unique in that it provides large and intuitive routine guidance throughout the living space with a beam projector. Instead of complex interfaces, the cognitive burden was reduced through visual information naturally exposed to the field of view. In addition, it is differentiated in that it can be easily customized by the guardian or user through the app and provides the ability to summarize and recall activities at the end of the day, helping the user recover his or her self-directed life and emotional stability beyond simple schedule notifications. This service, which integrates the visual environment and sensory experiences to reduce cognitive burden and has a structure in which the guardian and user participate together, is distinct from existing products.
Future plans
In the future, we plan to add a voice guidance function so that even low-cognitive users can easily follow the routine. In addition, we plan to increase convenience by automatically operating the beam projector in conjunction with sensors that detect user movement. We also plan to reduce the burden of care and maximize the effect of support by strengthening the communication function that allows guardians and users to share the progress and retrospective of routines in real time. In addition, we will continue to improve UI reflecting user feedback and optimize projections tailored to various environments.
