What it does
PURE is a portable medical kit designed for children aged 2 to 12 with respiratory diseases. It combines a nebulizer, spirometer, pulse oximeter, and air purifier in a compact, intuitive system that ensures monitoring and autonomous management of care.
Your inspiration
We were inspired by Elisabetta’s story—a young girl with bronchospasm who struggles to recognize and manage symptoms on her own. Respiratory diseases affect millions of children and range from mild to severe. Daily management of treatments is often complex and requires constant support. With PURE, we aim to give children like Elisabetta simple, safe tools suited to their world, restoring their independence and peace of mind while also supporting families in daily care.
How it works
PURE integrates three main devices: a nebulizer for inhaled medication delivery, a spirometer with pulse oximeter to monitor respiratory function and oxygen saturation, and a combined purifier and humidifier with a washable filter. The nebulizer and spirometer are housed in a compact case designed for easy transport and independent use by the child, even outside the home. The purifier and humidifier improve indoor air quality but are not designed for portability. A dedicated app allows parents and doctors to remotely monitor health parameters, track symptoms, and manage devices, offering real-time access to essential data and contact with healthcare professionals. Simple, intuitive touch controls enable users to adjust functions such as airflow and nebulization intensity with ease. PURE adapts to various daily contexts — at home, school, or while traveling — ensuring continuity of care and promoting autonomy, supported by an accessible and reassuring design.
Design process
The project began with an in-depth analysis of major respiratory diseases and of existing devices such as nebulizers, spirometers, oximeters, purifiers, and humidifiers. Our goal was to integrate these tools into a coherent, child-friendly system that would combine functionality, safety, and ease of use. The first design phase focused on creating compact, portable forms that balanced efficiency with a visual language suitable for children. Early prototypes — basic volumetric models — helped us define proportions, ergonomics, and handling comfort. This experimental phase allowed us to explore how young users would interact with each element of the system and laid the foundation for PURE’s accessible, friendly design. We then incorporated telemedicine features, designing a dedicated app for remote monitoring, symptom tracking, and device management. Usability was a core priority: intuitive touch controls, a child-friendly interface, and a washable filter with a built-in handle for easy maintenance and cleaning. Soft, rounded forms and clear, simple controls were essential to create a reassuring, familiar object. The logo and visual identity — inspired by the top view of the device — underline the coherence, harmony, and approachable nature of PURE’s design.
How it is different
PURE stands out for integrating multiple functions into a single system specifically designed for children. Unlike traditional devices, often made for adults or hospital settings, PURE offers a complete, portable kit that is easy to use and remotely controllable via app. It’s not just a collection of tools, but an ecosystem designed to foster children’s autonomy and reduce their reliance on constant supervision. The design merges aesthetics with functionality, featuring welcoming forms and intuitive interfaces that seamlessly fit into children’s daily lives. Its portability and modular approach allow the devices to adapt to various environments — from home to school to outdoor activities — ensuring continuous care. By combining medical efficiency with emotional comfort, PURE transforms health management into a familiar, accessible experience for young patients.
Future plans
We aim to enhance device integration, test usability with children, improve the app, and explore collaborations with healthcare organizations. Our ultimate goal is to create a product that balances functionality with design, moving beyond a purely medical appearance. We also intend to study industrial production processes that allow an easy assembly, reducing waste and simplifying maintenance. Material selection will focus on durability, recyclability, and child-safe finishes, promoting a sustainable approach. By addressing these aspects, we hope to ensure a long-lasting product lifecycle and responsible environmental impact.
