What it does

Unlike traditional passive anti drop phone cases, this phone case focuses on triggering conditioned reflex through vibration before the phone is taken off, reminding the user to hold the phone tightly and prevent the occurrence of phone falling incidents.


Your inspiration

The frequent occurrence of problems indicates a lack of design in this area, and generally anti drop designs can only prevent damage to the phone. So preventive design emerged, and at the same time, in order to enable users to react immediately, a suitable reminder method is needed, and vibration is undoubtedly the most suitable choice. On the one hand, it provides strong tactile feedback while being simple to implement. On the other hand, most mobile phone users develop the habit of holding their phones tightly to check messages. By using this feature, users can hold their phones tightly without realizing that they are about to fall off.


How it works

The bottom and sides of the phone case are equipped with pressure sensors. The bottom pressure sensor is used to determine whether the phone is in a seated position, while the side pressure sensor is used to detect the grip of the phone in real time. When the pressure at the bottom of the phone is insufficient (judged as non seated state) and the side pressure is below the set threshold, it is judged as about to be released. The phone case vibrates at high frequencies, and the human body feels it and reflexively holds the phone to prevent it from being released.


Design process

This design originated from my personal life and sudden inspiration. In terms of user orientation, the demand for mobile phone detachment can be seen through daily life observation. After searching online, it was found that there was a gap in preventive design in this area. Therefore, preventive design was taken as the focus of the design. During this period, protective design after detachment was considered. However, compared with preventive measures, the cost was high and the effect was small. It was better to focus on preventive design. Vibration reminder is a simple and easy to think of preventive method, and the use of the characteristic of conditioned reflex was accidentally discovered after adopting this design. Therefore, the overall design thread and framework were determined.


How it is different

Based on the anti slip and anti fall phone case solution, focusing on two core innovative points of preventive design and human interaction: Preventive protection: Traditional solutions only provide passive fall protection (such as silicone cushioning) and cannot intervene before falling. This plan uses pressure monitoring to provide early warning of hand slip risks and prevent them before they occur. Vibration warning mechanism based on human conditioned reflex: utilizing the instinctive stress response of the human body to vibration, when the anti slip module detects a decrease in grip strength, the phone case immediately triggers high-frequency short vibrations, awakens muscle memory, promotes instinctive tightening of the hand, and reduces the probability of detachment. Vibration stimulation can activate the spinal reflex arc within 0.2 seconds, triggering limb responses faster than visual/auditory reminders.


Future plans

Protection supplement: Under the condition of cost control, a fall protection design is made to prevent a few unavoidable situations of detachment (such as loss of force due to impact on the human body), forming a dual guarantee (depending on the actual use effect). Market promotion: While the market demand is high, there is a lack of this type of design in the market. This design has great market potential, and cooperation with well-known mobile phone brands can be considered for promotion.
