What it does
Motina is a smart air purifier that senses your emotions through facial and voice analysis. It reacts with air, light, and scent to support mental well-being and reduce invisible stress in your daily indoor life.
Your inspiration
Modern people spend most of their time indoors, often under stress from work, relationships, and social pressure. Many experience emotional fatigue or anxiety without realizing it. I focused on the idea that emotions—like air—are invisible but deeply affected by our environment. Factors such as air quality, lighting, and scent significantly influence our mental state, yet few devices actively respond to these changes. Motina was born from the desire to address this gap: a smart emotional care device that senses how you feel and gently adjusts your surroundings to support your well-being.
How it works
Motina is an AI-powered emotional care air purifier that senses users’ feelings through facial expressions and vocal tone, using an on-device neural network. It combines emotional cues with environmental data—CO₂, PM2.5, temperature, humidity, and light—to understand both mental and physical conditions. Based on this, Motina adjusts airflow, lighting, and scent to support emotional well-being. For example, when stress is detected with high CO₂, it increases ventilation, releases calming scents, and shifts lighting to a warm tone. All data is processed locally for privacy, and the system adapts to user preferences over time—turning a passive device into an emotionally responsive companion.
Design process
“What if a device could sense my emotional state and adjust my environment accordingly?” Initial research revealed that many people experience stress and fatigue due to unseen factors like poor air quality or lighting. Interviews confirmed the need for a device that connects emotional well-being with environmental control. We developed a working prototype using a Raspberry Pi, camera, and air quality sensors (CO₂, VOC, PM2.5), connected to basic lighting and a scent diffuser. Early testing showed successful emotion recognition and air control, but scent delivery lacked accuracy and lighting transitions were abrupt. To improve the system, we plan to -Introduce a precise, multi-capsule scent module -Upgrade LED control for smoother light transitions -Replace the CPU with an edge AI processor for real-time emotional analysis -Refine enclosure design to reduce noise Through iterative testing, Motina continues to evolve into a responsive, emotionally intelligent home device.
How it is different
Unlike traditional air purifiers that focus solely on air quality, Motina introduces an emotional layer to environmental care. It uniquely combines AI-based emotion recognition with real-time control of air, light, and scent—creating a personalized and responsive atmosphere for mental well-being. While wellness devices and mood lights exist separately, Motina integrates these functions into a single system that adapts to how you feel. It does not require manual input; instead, it proactively senses emotional states and adjusts the environment accordingly. This fusion of mental health awareness with ambient intelligence is what sets Motina apart as an emotionally intelligent home device.
Future plans
We plan to refine Motina through user testing and data analysis, focusing on improving emotional accuracy and environmental response. Future developments include a more compact form factor, enhanced scent delivery control, and deeper AI personalization based on long-term usage patterns. We also aim to explore integration with smart home platforms and conduct clinical validation to assess its impact on mental well-being. Ultimately, we envision Motina as a daily-use wellness device that bridges emotion and environment in everyday life.
