What it does
MedPod dispenses medicine accurately, alerts users with sound/vibration, helps locate lost pods, tracks vitals, reminds users of appointments, and instantly alerts caregivers in emergencies. Designed to support aging individuals in daily health tasks.
Your inspiration
The idea for MedPod came from watching someone I love silently struggle with aging, missing doses, forgetting pills, and waiting alone after a fall. These weren’t just signs of forgetfulness, but reminders of how aging erodes independence and dignity. The unspoken fear haunted me: What if I become a burden? What if no one notices? MedPod was born from that ache, to not just remind, but reassure. To protect health, without compromising pride. It’s my quiet promise to those we love: you are not alone. You are still in control. And your life still matters deeply.
How it works
MedPod is a smart dispenser with two stackable levels and seven compartments for organizing a full week’s doses. Medicines can be easily installed using the companion app, which provides step-by-step visual guidance for loading each slot accurately. When it’s time to take a dose, the app and device alert the user with a gentle beep, vibration, and light. A single press of the MedPod’s button automatically opens the correct compartment, no confusion, no searching. An integrated medicine cutter makes splitting pills safe and simple. If the device is misplaced, the “Find My Pod” feature triggers a sound and vibration to help locate it. The app also tracks vitals (heart rate, oxygen, BP), reminds users of doctor appointments, and sends emergency alerts if a fall or abnormal reading is detected. With large buttons, readable text, and one-tap SOS, MedPod empowers seniors to manage health independently, with dignity and ease.
Design process
The journey of designing MedPod began not with technology, but with conversations with grandparents and caregivers who quietly shoulder the complexities of aging. I spent time observing their routines, frustrations, and quiet victories. What stood out wasn’t just the challenge of remembering medication, but the invisible burden of dependence. From those insights, the first sketches emerged, simple forms meant to restore a sense of control. The early prototypes were humble: cardboard cutouts with color-coded lids, tested by seniors to ensure compartments were easy to grip and alerts gentle yet clear. As the design evolved, so did my vision. I built a digital companion, an app that wouldn’t just remind, but reassure; not just track vitals, but offer peace of mind. Every screen was designed with accessibility in mind: bold type, large buttons, zero clutter. I added features to keep families connected without overwhelming the user discreet alerts, shared health data, location support. I tested with real users, iterating from their lived feedback. One senior told me, “It feels like someone’s looking out for me.” That became my compass. MedPod is more than a product, it’s a promise. Proof of what design can do when it listens deeply, not just to needs, but to the human heart.
How it is different
Unlike basic pillboxes or reminder apps, MedPod is a complete health companion designed with empathy for aging users. It doesn’t just remind, it responds. The physical device and app work together to guide, alert, and assist without overwhelming. A single button opens the correct compartment at the right time, eliminating guesswork. Medicine installation is made simple through step-by-step app guidance, and a built-in cutter helps with splitting pills safely. What truly sets MedPod apart is its holistic approach: it monitors vital signs, tracks wellness, locates the device if misplaced, and instantly alerts caregivers in emergencies. Every touchpoint from large buttons and text to subtle feedback, respects the needs of seniors while preserving their independence. MedPod is not a gadget. It's peace of mind, thoughtfully designed to help our elders feel safe, capable, and cared for, without needing to ask.
Future plans
Next, I plan to run pilot programs in eldercare homes and geriatric clinics to gather real-world feedback. I’m working on refining the hardware for mass production, focusing on affordability and durability. On the software side, I aim to add voice support, AI-driven health insights, and explore pharmacy integrations for auto-refills. My long-term vision is to build an ecosystem around MedPod, including fall-safe accessories and wearables, so it becomes a trusted part of aging, helping seniors live with greater dignity, safety, and independence.
