What it does

ESG AI is a service design that focuses on sustainable human-machine collaboration relationships. It adopts a service model where user communities and generative AI jointly participate in ESG actions,

Your inspiration

How can we express gratitude to generative AI? This was a thought-provoking question posed by The New York Times to its readers this year. According to Sam Altman, the CEO of Open AI, companies need to consume over 100 million kilowatt-hours of electricity each year to handle the "thanks" and other polite remarks from ChatGPT users. This hot issue reflects the human-machine anxiety relationship in the context of ecological auditing and ESG issues. Therefore, we have attempted to design a service model where AI and users jointly participate in ESG actions.

How it works

Large AI company responds to around 200 million requests per day, consuming over half a million kilowatts of power during model inference; But simple conversations can hardly make users aware of the high consumption behind AI services. ESG AI aims to spread Sustainable Concept through AI services: the community sets daily low-carbon travel and living tasks, and regularly organizes offline tree planting and volunteering activities; Users who complete ESG tasks can obtain more credits and permissions for AI use, so as to build a mutually beneficial cooperation model among humans, AI and nature.

Design process

During the design process, we went through two iterations. Initially, we mainly focused on the carbon emissions of AI and visualization. Later, through specific user research, we learned that most users were aware of the high energy consumption behind AI, but due to their usage habits and work requirements, they became dependent on AI. However, users still were willing to participate in some daily actions related to sustainability with the assistance of AI. Therefore, in the second version, we focused on designing a reasonable human-computer interaction model in the ESG actions to assist users. In the third version, we optimized the exchange mechanism of API and AI tokens.

How it is different

Compared to other AI-driven service design and interaction design, we focus on the sustainability issues behind AI; compared to traditional sustainable service design, we attempt to leverage the excellent interaction patterns and model capabilities of generative AI to enhance the user experience in participating in ESG actions. We hope to utilize the ESG AI service model to optimize the human-machine relationship, and promote the participation of user communities and generative AI in sustainable actions together.

Future plans

The ESG AI design team has currently completed the preliminary user research, touchpoint analysis, behavior analysis and interaction design. Subsequently, they will develop the initial demo. The design team, relying on the Cognitive Science and Intelligent Design Laboratory of China University of Mining and Technology, has been dedicated to assisting industries with high energy consumption in their sustainable development transformation. They have a lot of experience in carbon reduction and emission reduction. The design team is considering collaborating with some start-ups engaged in generative AI infrastructure and C-end API distribution
