What it does

Poor visibility and limited communication underwater make it hard to signal help or coordination with others. This device offers a hands-free signaling system to solve that

Your inspiration

This device was inspired by the natural communication of fireflies. In darkness, fireflies use rhythmic flashes of light to signal and interact with each others, creating a silent yet powerful language. We applied this concept to underwater communication, where visibility is low and verbal cues are impossible. Just like fireflies, divers can now exchange signals through simple, intuitive light patterns-even without using their hands.

How it works

This lighting system is designed to integrate seamlessly with existing diving fins, eliminating the need for users to purchase new equipment. It features a user-friendly attachment method using built-in holes on both ends of the device, allowing it to be securely mounted on a wide range of standard fin models. The system enables intuitive color-based signaling underwater without the use of hands. By simply tapping their heels together, divers can change the LED light color. An internal impact sensor detects this motion and triggers the color change in real time. This hands-free mechanism ensures ease of use and enhances underwater communication, especially in situations where divers' hands are occupied or visibility is limited. The combination of compatibility, ease of attachment, and intuitive operation makes the system highly practical for recreational, training, and professional diving scenarios.

Design process

This is a concept product, not yet intended for real-world use. It was developed as an experimental exploration into new methods of underwater communication, particularly in environments with poor visibility and limited mobility. The goal was to create an intuitive, hands-free signaling system using light, inspired by nature’s silent communicators—fireflies. While not fully functional or commercially ready, the concept aims to challenge conventional thinking and spark innovation in future diving technologies.

How it is different

What makes this concept product truly original is its unique combination of intuitive design, natural inspiration, and practical functionality. Unlike traditional underwater communication tools that rely on complex hand signals, expensive gear, or limited-range sound systems, this device offers a hands-free, light-based method inspired by fireflies’ silent signaling. The use of heel-tap activation is particularly innovative, allowing divers to change light colors without interrupting their movements or using their hands—essential in low-visibility or high-focus scenarios. Additionally, the system’s compatibility with existing fins eliminates the need for specialized equipment, making the idea more accessible and adaptable. By blending nature’s simplicity with user-centered design, the work challenges conventional approaches to underwater interaction and presents a new, poetic vision for future dive technologies.

Future plans

The next step is to develop a working prototype and test its functionality in real underwater conditions. We plan to refine the heel-tap sensor system, improve waterproofing, and explore color visibility in various depths. The ultimate goal is to evolve the concept into a safe, reliable tool for divers.
