What it does
Byoost solves the problem of time-consuming and ineffective male grooming routines by integrating AI-driven skin and scalp analysis with microcurrent therapy, LED treatment, moisturization, and beard care tools into one compact device.
Your inspiration
The idea came from observing how male grooming is often overlooked, with men either lacking time or access to personalized care tools. After facing similar frustrations and analyzing survey data on men’s confidence and grooming habits, we designed Byoost to fill this technological and social gap with one inclusive solution. Byoost, though it started as our design engineered for L'Oreal Competition, and we didn't get to reach finals, we see a much more potential in this product. A go-to daily tool that could break barriers of how men could remove bias and groom themselves with many in one options anywhere, anytime.
How it works
Byoost uses an onboard AI processor and sensors to scan the skin and scalp, identifying real time conditions. It activates specific treatments like microcurrent stimulation for hair growth, dual-LED therapy for acne or aging, and built-in moisturization. A modular compartment stores beard tools, while a digital screen guides users through tailored care routines. Reusable cartridges and polycarbonate casing for storing say, extra lotions or SPF, make it both eco-friendly and durable. With the 3D designs and model engineering of how the handheld portable device seamlessly works without any hassle in daily life, we are 3D printing the product itself from recycled plastic as our initial prototype, and make it as sustainable design as possible.
Design process
We began with concept sketches and market surveys to validate the need. Our first prototype were the existing solutions tested individual components: LED light therapy, microcurrent response, and AI-based scanning. Feedback revealed the need for portability and better UI, leading us to integrate all features into a modular design. If looked into current products and technology, the innovation exists, we are here to simplify the process through design engineering for better lifestyle. We then optimized energy use and ergonomics to support all-in-one functionality while reducing size and cost. Our current stage combines validated tech and supports real-time personalization via screen-based interaction which can be then connected to an app for real time hair and skincare support from an AI dermatologist-expert.
How it is different
Unlike existing beauty devices, Byoost is designed specifically for men and merges multiple care routines like skin, beard, and scalp into a single intelligent device. It’s personalized, portable, and multifunctional, eliminating the need for multiple tools and the hassle for time constraints in selfcare. It also emphasizes inclusivity, working across all skin and hair types, and is eco-conscious through its reusable and durable components.
Future plans
The global men’s grooming market is projected to exceed $115 billion by 2030, with beard growth and hair loss treatments being one of the fastest-growing segments. Our next steps include building a final prototype with testing and iterating processes going hand-in-hand, launching a pilot program for early adopters, and partnering with brands like Dyson to work on feasible design realism engineering and principles. We aim to scale globally through retail and D2C, backed by an awareness campaign focused on redefining men’s beauty tech. Our long-term goal is to make Byoost the go to device for personalized male self-care worldwide.
