What it does
Bernoulli Bin is a compact trash bin for small apartments. It uses a pneumatic system to compress garbage, reducing its volume and the need for plastic bags and trips to dispose of waste. Three separate compartments boost recycling and space efficiency.
Your inspiration
The inspiration for Bernoulli Bin came from a close analysis of daily issues experienced by apartment dwellers, particularly those resident with limited space who finds conventional bins bulky, unhygienic, and visually intrusive. We also observed industrial waste management practices, such as how garbage trucks and recycling centers use compression to improve efficiency. This inspired us to adapt industrial pneumatic compression techniques for domestic use, thereby scaling down a proven method for everyday households.
How it works
The Bernoulli Bin uses a pneumatic compression system activated by a foot pump. When the user pumps air into a sealed chamber, it expands and pushes a plate upward against the garbage bag, compressing the waste inside without direct contact. Once compressed, the user can either maintain the pressure to remove the bag or release the air, allowing the plate to return to its initial position. This system: - Reduces physical effort, - Avoids manual compression (more hygienic), - Allows one compression mechanism to serve three different bins, enhancing convenience and sorting.
Design process
The project followed a user-centered design process, starting with identifying problems related to space, hygiene, and waste management in small homes. After analyzing existing products and market gaps, we explored technical possibilities for implementing compression in a home-friendly way. They iterated through sketches, prototypes, and technical modeling. The design was refined through physical models and ergonomic studies to ensure functionality and accessibility for a wide range of users.
How it is different
Several elements make the Bernoulli Bin stand out: - Pneumatic compression: Most home compactors use manual force; Bernoulli Bin's foot-pumped air system is easier and cleaner. - Three-in-one design: It integrates separate bins for different types of waste, reducing clutter and encouraging recycling. - Sustainability: It promotes less frequent waste disposal, less plastic bag use, and better compression for downstream recycling efficiency. - Elegant aesthetics: Designed to be visible and integrated into the kitchen space rather than hidden away, breaking the mold of unsightly trash bins.
Future plans
The Bernoulli Bin opens the door to a variety of future applications: - Urban infrastructure: As part of smart city solutions, coordinated bins like these could reduce collection frequency and costs.
