What it does

AdaptaType tackles typing challenges faced by kids, seniors, and users with motor issues. Its modular system adapts to various keyboards, adding ergonomic supports that stabilize hands for more accurate, low-effort typing.


Your inspiration

The motivation to address this problem arose from observing the barriers many people face when performing a task as fundamental as digital typing. We realized that despite technological advances, devices often fail to consider the diversity of motor abilities. We envisioned adapting that concept of adjustability and support to the keyboard environment, creating a system that could be easily integrated and offer a personalized solution for each user. The key was to design a set of universal guides that would allow for the movement and locking of the supports in the most comfortable and functional position for each individual.


How it works

AdaptaType consists of three main components that work together to improve typing ease and comfort: 1. Universal Adaptation Guides: Two long bars attach to any keyboard’s sides. These feature an inverted “T” groove that lets other parts slide and lock securely. Made of lightweight yet durable materials. 2. Sliding Wrist Rests: Designed to slide along the guides, these rests adjust to each user’s hand width and posture. Once positioned, they lock in place with a lever or screw. Their memory foam padding and non-slip fabric provide ergonomic wrist and forearm support, reducing strain. 3. Keyboard Attachment Clamps: Located at each end of the guides, these universal clamps secure the system to various keyboard types without damage. Adjustable pressure ensures a snug fit. The result is a modular, adaptable system that stabilizes the hands, reduces fatigue, and enhances typing accuracy—especially helpful for users with motor challenges.


Design process

1: Idea Generation and Problem Definition The idea arose after seeing a 14-year-old with severe fine motor issues struggle to use a keyboard in class. We noticed a lack of adaptable typing aids for users with diverse motor challenges. In our first brainstorming session, we explored ways to stabilize hands and support typing—considering gloves, magnetic aids, and keyboard attachments. We defined the problem as: “Design a product adaptable to different keyboards that facilitates typing for people with motor difficulties, including children, the elderly, and those with fine motor or movement challenges.” A mind map helped us explore the issue. Our initial research focused on current ergonomic products, revealing their limitations in adaptability and inclusivity. 2: Conceptualization We generated ideas using random words, gifs, and images. This helped spark creative directions. A second mind map, inspired by living organisms, guided functional innovation. We sketched mechanisms for guide attachment, wrist rest movement, and clamp design. Using Excel and TRIZ methods, we assessed components to refine them. 3: Basic 3D Modeling We built a basic 3D prototype in Blender to visualize layout and approximate dimensions, helping us assess spatial relationships between components.


How it is different

AdaptaType stands out by combining features that address key limitations of traditional solutions: Universal Keyboard Adaptability: Its mounting guides fit almost any keyboard, unlike fixed or model-specific wrist rests, eliminating the need for multiple accessories. Personalized Support: Unlike static supports, AdaptaType’s wrist rests slide and lock to match hand width, posture, and user preference, offering optimal ergonomics. Modular Flexibility: Its system of guides, sliding rests, and clamps adapts to tasks and user needs. Clamps can also serve as extra hand supports for users with tremors or motor issues. Inclusive Design: Made for all, AdaptaType supports children, seniors, and users with diverse motor challenges, going beyond typical one-size-fits-all products. Robust Yet Simple: Durable materials and intuitive mechanisms make it easy to install and adjust, with no tech skills required.


Future plans

AdaptaType’s development will focus on refining it into a practical, inclusive tool that truly meets user needs. We aim to build improved prototypes for real-world testing in classrooms, homes, libraries, … gathering insights from users with tremors, limited dexterity, or age-related motor challenges. User feedback will guide iterative improvements in comfort, adaptability, and ease of use. We’ll collaborate with experts in inclusive design, therapy, and HCI, and explore pilot programs with schools and rehab centers. Our goal: a robust, flexible system that adapts to each user—an evolving solution, not a one-size-fits-all product.
