What it does
REVO is a sleek, sporty wheelchair with pedal assist and a pneumatic lift that elevates users to eye level, easing fatigue and enabling confident, dignified interactions. It redefines mobility by replacing the medical look with empowerment and independence.
Your inspiration
This project was inspired by the stories of individuals who became disabled in the prime of their lives. Many expressed frustration at the loss of independence in everyday situations — like reaching a shelf or facing condescension during conversations. We saw a gap in assistive mobility devices that often focused only on function, not dignity. The idea for REVO came from merging inclusive design with cutting-edge mobility tech — reframing the wheelchair as a symbol of empowerment, not limitation. Everyone deserves to feel confident, seen, and in control — REVO makes that possible.
How it works
REVO is powered by a quiet, built-in motor that provides pedal assist — similar to an electric bicycle. As the user pushes the wheels, the motor detects the movement and adds just the right amount of boost to make going up slopes or long distances easier, reducing fatigue. For daily tasks, a pneumatic lift system is built under the seat. With the press of a button, the seat gently rises, allowing users to reach higher places or engage in eye-level conversations. The chair locks its wheels automatically during the lift for safety. REVO runs on a rechargeable lithium-ion battery, which can be easily removed and charged. Every detail — from the button layout to the frame — was designed to be intuitive, functional, and empowering.
Design process
The design process began with in-depth research and interviews with individuals who had experienced sudden mobility loss. We focused on understanding their daily challenges — physical, emotional and social. From there, we studied existing mobility devices and identified gaps, especially in areas like self-image, independence and dignity. Using insights from consultations with users and healthcare professionals, we refined the concept through multiple digital iterations. We explored form, function, and CMF (color, material, finish) to ensure REVO felt sleek and empowering. Drawing inspiration from sporty vehicles and performance gear, we crafted a design language that balances functionality with bold, athletic aesthetics. Every curve and component were fine-tuned to support both utility and confidence. While we did not build a physical prototype, we tested our assumptions through feedback loops, scenario mapping, and form studies, ensuring every design decision was grounded in real needs and aspirations. The result is a concept that blends innovation with emotional connection, aiming to transform how our target users experience mobility every day.
How it is different
REVO stands out by combining advanced assistive technology with a bold, sporty design that challenges the traditional medical wheelchair aesthetic. Unlike many wheelchairs that focus only on function, REVO prioritises user dignity and empowerment. Its pedal-assist system, inspired by e-bikes, lets users effortlessly navigate slopes and longer distances while maintaining control and reducing fatigue. The pneumatic lift seat enables users to elevate themselves to eye level for social interactions and daily tasks — rare in other wheelchairs. REVO’s sleek, athletic look breaks the stereotype of wheelchairs as medical devices, presenting a symbol of strength and independence. Intuitive controls and an easy-access lithium-ion battery ensure seamless usability. Overall, REVO redefines mobility by blending cutting-edge technology, thoughtful ergonomics, and inspiring design to enhance confidence and freedom unlike any other product on the market.
Future plans
The next step for REVO is to develop and manufacture a fully functional physical prototype to test and refine its mechanical and electronic systems in real-world conditions. We aim to collaborate with engineers, healthcare professionals, and users to optimize performance, safety, and comfort. Future plans include integrating smart sensors for adaptive assistance and expanding customisation options for style and functionality. Ultimately, we hope to bring REVO to market as an affordable, empowering mobility solution that transforms how users experience independence and social inclusion.
Awards
