What it does

Sleeping Will is a mobile app that helps users improve sleep habits and overcome procrastination. It offers goal-setting, group check-ins, and a quiz to identify habits, plus a levitating aroma diffuser for a better sleep environment.

Your inspiration

The high-pressure work and learning environments have led to 'Revenge Bedtime Procrastination,' where people sacrifice sleep for leisure due to limited free time. The pandemic has blurred the boundaries between work and rest, worsening this trend and causing a sleep-related health crisis. Immediate happiness turns into guilt and anxiety, as the allure of electronic devices keeps people up late repeatedly, ultimately harming their well-being.

How it works

Sleeping Will is a mobile sleep app aimed at helping people who engage in revenge bedtime procrastination establish a healthy sleep routine. By setting progressive goals, participating in group sleep check-ins, recording emotions, and providing sleep guides, it helps users create a comfortable sleep environment, manage their emotions, and gradually develop the habit of going to bed earlier with the support of companions. Considering that mobile phones are a major factor, Sleeping Will primarily operates as a mobile platform. Users first take a quiz to understand the reasons behind their late-night habits, then join the app to start sleep check-ins with other users, encouraging each other. By using a levitating aroma wood diffuser, they can create a comfortable sleep environment, making it easier to gradually develop the habit step by step.

Design process

Through research, the causes of revenge bedtime procrastination (RBP) are addiction, a lack of me-time, and feeling guilty for procrastination. However, not everyone who struggles with RBP; some enjoy nighttime as personal time. Feedback from the Capstone 1 presentation led me to refine the target audience, focusing specifically on university students who experience negative emotions related to RBP, as this approach is more practical. I narrow down the topic into "Stop Hong Kong University students from RBP at night, resulting in negative feelings and a vicious cycle." To deal with addiction, a lack of me-time, and Guilt, the solution are monitoring, regular and healthy sleep hygiene, and stress management. I plan to design a sleep remedy product and a coloring app. Challenges include addiction and a weak link between coloring and RBP, as it may not appeal to users seeking relaxation. Additionally, the sleep remedy lacks design consistency. A scent app that is simple and relaxing is essential for the project. A new direction involves developing a Companion Early Sleep Streaking App with an aroma dispenser. The target audience includes individuals facing RBP, especially those with Addicted and Guilt RBP, who are generally more motivated.

How it is different

Interviews revealed that monitoring can effectively address revenge bedtime procrastination (RBP) and addiction, with regular follow-ups and mutual supervision being beneficial. Online support groups emphasize peer encouragement. I also explored the Hong Kong brand 慕蔭恭公司 and its Crazily Revenge Diary, which allowed me to express anger and connect with others, highlighting the importance of sharing emotions. The design comprises three stages: social media promotion, a companion app for early sleep streaking, and a magnetic levitation aroma diffuser. The app starts with a quiz to identify late-night habits and aims to establish a healthy sleep routine by incorporating recommendations from Cotliar and Suni (2023) on consistent bedtimes. It features progressive goal-setting and visuals that evoke sleepiness, ensuring a cohesive user experience.

Future plans

Due to the current lack of technical support and funding to advance research on this project, I intend to further develop my skills by acquiring relevant competencies, such as programming. Should a third party express interest in this design, I would be eager to discuss its feasibility and potential business opportunities.
