What it does
Braille Sense meets the needs of visually impaired users by reducing learning barriers through real-time Braille-to-speech, ergonomic design, and easy navigation—delivering strong value and satisfaction for learners and educators.
Your inspiration
This thoughtful alignment between user needs and product capabilities ensures that Braille Sense not only meets functional requirements but also creates a meaningful impact, empowering users, improving educational outcomes, and fostering inclusion. In doing so, it builds satisfaction by providing tangible, lasting value to its users.
How it works
Braille Sense is a portable, pen-like assistive device that scans raised Braille characters using a tactile sensor and instantly converts them into speech through a built-in text-to-speech (TTS) system. Users move the device across embossed Braille text, and the device reads aloud each word in real-time. It features customizable voice output, adjustable speed, and supports both speaker and headphone use for privacy.
Design process
The design followed a user-centered approach using the House of Quality and Kano analysis to prioritize features like portability, accuracy, and ease of use. The team created a minimum viable product featuring a microcontroller, tactile sensor, and TTS module, all enclosed within a lightweight 3D-printed casing. Environmental sustainability and local sourcing of components were key considerations throughout the process.
How it is different
Unlike imported devices that are expensive, bulky, or lack real-time feedback, Braille Sense is uniquely tailored for Filipino users. It offers real-time Braille-to-speech translation, voice customization, and a compact, ergonomic form. It's also significantly more affordable, with a target price of around ₱11,357 compared to ₱80,000–₱200,000 for current alternatives. Its design supports local dialects and classroom use, bridging critical gaps in accessibility and affordability.
Future plans
Audex plans to: - Finalize the working prototype and begin pilot testing with SPED schools. - Partner with LGUs and NGOs for distribution and training programs. - Expand to more regions beyond NCR and CALABARZON. - Develop app integration and multilingual voice support. - File for patent protection and pursue broader intellectual property rights.
