What it does

The intuitive construction kit assists as a communication tool for engineers and their clients. Different compositions of the technical components and aspects of usability can be tested easily and discussed in the earliest stage of a product's development.

Your inspiration

Helbling Technik expressed the wish to own a communication tool that can be used in workshops with clients to boost the generation and expression of ideas and to demonstrate the different product solutions that are thinkable. To explain such issues only through speech often goes along with variant interpretations and misunderstanding. To develope a tool that supports this process through physical construction seemed to me like an irresistible challenge.

How it works

The overall dimensions of the vague product can be defined with a wire and a bending tool. Modules(display, battery, switch etc.) are getting prearranged and can be placed into frames, which take advantage of Rapid-Prototyping. Thanks to a parametric build up they can be resized and the kit can be expanded endlessly. Clips connect frames with the outline. At its position they remain rotatable and therefore flexible in their orientation. Four different kind of clips allow a variety of construction strategies. Straight and angled jack plugs connect the modules so that the assembly can be controlled with a software. The system enables to draw out visions in a first three-dimensional sketch and to try out variations during a one-day workshop.

Design process

The list of desirable features of the system to evolve was at first rather long: applicable at different scales and kinds of products the kit shall be able to represent the technical set-up from a insulin pen up to a coffee machine or also a laboratory device. Also it should be able to manage to foreshadow a possible shape of the product. A wide research from theories of communication an cognitive processes, electronical kits, modular sensors to the abstraction of shapes formed my basis for the start in the creative process. A sharp restriction of the field of application as well as the definition of the architectural structure of the electronics(Helbling) enabled me to rapidly come up with numerous concepts of varying approaches in the ideation phase. Three resulting concepts were reflected in several mock-ups of which the one skeletal structure convinced: Transparency ensures that the electronics are visible and therefore better discussable. A productlanguage is subtle implied without the aim to express a defined Design. There is still plenty of scope to the own imagination.

How it is different

The system offers a wide range of possibilities in the representation of ideas. Aspects of usability, construction space and the technical set-up of a product to develope can already be explored in the very beginning of product development. The simulation enables the evaluation of chances and risks of a concept. Consensus of different ideas between client and engineer can be achieved quicker. Communication is made easier and the process speeds up.

Future plans

Initially thought to be a tool for engineers and clients it is thinkable that an extension of this principle could also be used between other communicational counterparts like as between engineers and designers to bring collaborations to even more fruitfulness.
