What it does

Uflex is a one handed anti-hemorrhage device. – Uflex is for outdoor explorers. It's the solution for bleeding emergency in case where you are alone in an isolated place, hard to reach for rescue team.

Your inspiration

– Julian The inspiration for the project came from real experiences of heavy bleeding treatment. Indeed, I worked a few years as a lifeguard during summer Hollidays and I had to take care of victims suffering from heavy bleeding due to a fall or sailing accidents. Most of the emergency kits are unadapted to a quick and secure procedure. As a first aider we have to constantly maintain pressure on the bleeding wound and apply a pressure point through a compress and tight gauze. It’s a delicate operation to do rapidly and without contamination. What if you are alone and injured, suffering from a heavy bleeding? How to patch yourself up if you are unable to use simultaneously both of your hands and in state of shock? To my eyes, it appeared to be a real problem for design engineers to answer. – Inès Julian told me about this idea of a one handed anti bleeding device as he was unlocking his bike. I suggested to use the kind of reflective retractable metal bands that he uses on his bike, It easily claps on your arm in a flash. Uflex was born.

How it works

Uflex is an all-in-one self-inflating compress and gauze for bleeding emergency. – Alone and injured, how to save yourself from heavy bleeding? In case of a severe injury to a critical artery and if pressure is not quickly applied it can take just few minutes to bleed to death. During this time, the blood pressure drops, heart rate increases and you can experiment a state of shock. It means you have to quickly patch yourself and call for help. The product is made of a retractable metal band that allows a user-friendly one-handed set up on the wound. Then Uflex inflates and maintains pressure to stop the hemorrhage. Uflex fit in most emergency kit that you can bring with you for outdoor activities.

Design process

– Our specifications were very familiar to Julian regarding his experience as a first-aider. The real challenge was to make it "fit" on the wound, it had to be locked while maintaining constant pressure. Very quickly we were able to confirm our hypothesis with quick and dirty mock-up: the retractable metal bands allows to lock the compress on the wound efficiently. Once the device is applied, we noticed that to stop a massive bleeding from an artery it had to be strongly tighten up. We discussed various mechanical solutions (with strings, handles or tourniquet), draw many rough of our ideas and finally came up with an inflatable fabric maintained with Velcro. It is a beautiful solution, inexpensive, efficient and answering all of our constraints. – The inflating process is based on polyurethane foaming. The fabric is made of two compartments filled with polyol and isocyanate. Once Uflex is placed and rolled around the wound, the partition between the compartments will break and allow the two liquids to mix and inflate. – We have made a dozen of prototypes (paper made and sewed fabric) before attaining the final one.
