What it does
Sit & Stand is a hands-free walking assistance device for people with temporary foot, ankle or leg injuries which also functions as a personal seat that enables the user to rest and relax as needed.
It all started as a class project. The challenge was to design a crutch which performs better than traditional forearm and underarm crutches for young adults with temporary leg injuries. As a part of the class project, I reviewed the evolution of crutches through the time, I interviewed people with the same problem and also as an experiment, I tried to do most of my daily activities as a person with leg injury, using traditional crutches. The results from interviews and the experiment showed that the main problem is related to limitations in the use of hands. So my new challenge was to come up with a solution that enables crutch users to have their hands free, while they could maintain their balance without any problem.
How it works
Sit & Stand is an innovative solution that enables people with leg injuries to do most of their personal activities such as opening doors, walking the stairs and carrying light objects on their own with ease. Sit & Stand also functions as a personal seat that enables the user to rest and relax as needed.
Based on the information that I gathered about the target users and different types of crutches available in the market, I tried to come up with a solution that is simple, suitable for both genders with different ages and different sizes. The new crutch needs to be lightweight, ergonomic, adjustable, and it needs to have a reasonable retail price. During the ideation process I came up with many different solutions and among them, the “Sit & Stand” seemed to fulfill all the expectations. To make sure I was going in the right direction, I made an adjustable wooden mock up that my classmates and I could test in action. After a few ergonomic modifications, I designed the final form of the concept using modeling foam to represent the final look of the “Sit & Stand”. Although my budget didn't allow me to go any further than this, the test results with the mock-up suggests that the project can be successful.
