What it does

The LUKE STAIRWALKER is a support device for elderly or disabled people, who have problems with climbing stairs.

Your inspiration

Everybody knows it from his own familie that the grandparents and later the parents get problems to walk stairs. Often they could walk but are afraid to fall down by walking stairs or they need a support from an other person. We thought about this situation and searched about an other solution like the stairlifts. For many people is this system to expensive or they haven´t enough space in their staircase. We designed this mechanical System (Luke Stairwalker) in an ergonomic project.

How it works

The LUKE STAIRWALKER is a support device for elderly or disabled people, who have problems with climbing stairs. It saves the person from falling or slipping on the stair and offers through its improved ergonomics a more powerful and save grip. Furthermore the backrest gives the opportunity to lean back and take a rest if it is needed. In contrast to traditional stair lifts, the LUKESTAIRWALKER can be installed in small staircases without big reconstruction works, too. Only the customized handrail need to be attached to the wall. As a result the LUKESTAIRWALKER-System can be installed on multiple stairs in households or public spaces, for a significantly lower price than conventional systems. It offers elderly people the opportunity to maintain their autonomy and create a feeling of safety and confidence. Flexible Dimensions A click mechanism allows to adjust the size between handlebar and backrest. Optional the removing of the backrest is possible, if this type of support is not necessary. The turnable bail allows to change the direction of walking with just a single movement.

Design process

To get a sense for our users, we spoke with the elderly and retired regarding their challenges with ambulation. The primary issue that arose through our focus groups was walking with stairs. Given that the geriatric population suffers from chronic knee issues, the handrail becomes a primary tool to relieve the burden from the knees. However, the key message we found was that the standard handrail was uncomfortable and not conducive to comfortable supported walking. So far, we have developed and tested multiple handle positions and mounts. We have since discovered that the 'C' form enables the firmest, most stable, comfortable grip. In addition, a seat can be positioned in the rear when a pause or break is necessary. This critical piece also provides a safeguard from falling, which can be detrimental. This novel handgrip and seating mechanism ensures safe, efficient, and effective use of stairs for the elderly.
