Your inspiration

I saw news reports about people failing to escape during car accidents or flooding due to panic or unconsciousness. While seat belt cutters exist, they may be out of reach or displaced by impact, delaying escape and risking loss of golden time. A disposable seat belt, like an airbag, could automatically cut upon impact, allowing quick evacuation. While seat belts protect passengers during a crash, they can also trap them afterward. An auto-cutting seat belt could secure golden time and reduce casualties.

How it works

When a car crashes, the airbags are activated through the collision sensor and the seat belt is attached to the seat. After the collision system is activated on the top, the safety belt emergency cutting system automatically activates to help the injured person escape by cutting the seat belt. If a vehicle is in a situation where the seat belt is not supposed to be released, such as a cliff, it detects the weight of the seat belt and prevents the cutting device from operating. If the accident vehicle comes into the safety range, the manually operable button on the vehicle door is used to cut the seat belt and allow it to escape. The safety belt cutting device has a simple structure because it should not break down well. Install the cutter just above the seat belt pretensioner. The cutter works in the same way as the scissors. Scissors use human power, but the cutter uses motor power to cut the seat belt.

Design process

In order to find the concept, we looked for certain disadvantages of products sold on the market and problems compared to the news. Various methods were devised to make products that solve the problem. The first way I conceived was to burst the seat belt clip part with gunpowder so that it could escape. However, there was a problem that the person in the seat could be injured due to the debris generated from the bursting. So I thought of a way to cut the seat belt. There are commercial products, but the way to cut the seat belt was devised to compensate for the shortcomings of commercial products. After that, I conceived a method of operation and a method that does not break down easily, and thought of a principle similar to that of scissors. In addition, it is designed to operate with a structure and principle as simple as possible so that the equipment does not lose competitiveness due to its high price.

How it is different

There is a product called a seat belt cutter on the market. However, a product on the market needs human power and rational judgment to break the seat belt and escape. However, the seat belt emergency cutting system prevents a computer from escaping when a person is embarrassed by judging an accident and cutting it, and those on the market must be carried by a person, making it difficult to escape if they are bounced off by the impact of an accident.

Future plans

First, it will be applied to cars to reduce missing the gold time. In the future, it will be applied to transportation so that it can be helped in case of escape. The final goal of the product is to reduce the number of escape accidents by rescuing without missing the gold time. In the future, we plan to transform the product into a product that can cut off the cord if it is difficult for a person to cut off directly among the parts fixed with the cord.
