What it does
Delta Alert accurately and precisely detects seismic vibrations, tilt, and displacement in unstable rubble zones. It alerts underground and surface teams in real time, offering crucial time to evacuate or reposition safely.
Your inspiration
The idea began during a university brief to design for a real world problem. I initially felt lost on what to focus on until I saw the news coverage of the Israel and Palestine conflict. Scenes of widespread destruction and people trapped under collapsed buildings moved me deeply. I wanted to design something that could make even a small difference in situations like that where every second counts.
How it works
Delta Alert consists of two adjustable sensor poles, a wearable vest with alerts, and a surface alert unit. After positioning the poles, one near the entrance to an opening or artificially created one by responders one is then placed deeper in if viable (to create two point monitoring across the corridor or opening). The responder pulls a pin that is magnetic and is near a reed switch so that it activates the device and also as the pin leaves the device it releases the preloaded springs (at 55% compression), pressing the sensor module firmly up against the rubble. A hall sensor tracks changes in spring compression to detect linear displacement in an enclosed dust free environment, while an onboard gyroscope monitors tilt. An accelerometer detects seismic vibrations and subtle shifts caused by rubble slouch or creep often early signs of micro cracking. If instability is detected, the system warns both surface and underground teams via sound, light, and vibration
Design process
The project began with the self pronounced brief on "How to reduce the severity of injuries sustained in disasters affecting people". I applied the ARRIVE framework throughout the project. In Audit, I gathered academic and social insights and conducted a SWOT analysis on existing products and devices. During Research, I watched documentaries and interviews on rescue operations. I initially aimed to assist trapped survivors, but in Reframe, shifted focus to responders, whose mobility and role in high risk zones make them ideal users and their success and safety also affects the survivability rate of trapped survivors. In Ideate, I explored sketches and concepts. To Validate, I consulted firefighters at fire stations and mechanical engineers, both of which supported the concept and showed intrigue. In Execute, I developed rapid deployment sensor poles and then moved on to bi-directional ratcheting like systems. Early prototypes included cardboard mockups and 3D-printed versions. Sensor systems were tested with Arduino prototype level components and wireless ESP32 wifi network system to monitor tilt and displacement and communicate amongst the three key devices. Each iteration improved speed, durability, and alert clarity culminating into a design consideration filled end prototype.
How it is different
Delta Alert combines vibration, tilt, and displacement monitoring in one portable system. Unlike static or mount-dependent devices, it’s deployable in seconds, even in confined rubble. Its spring cup sensor mounting method, self-powered activation, and dual communication (vest + surface alert unit) offer real time alerts without compromising mobility, making it unique in high-risk, warzone scenarios. The vest that the responder would wear with the two poles on their back contains a vibration disc on the front pocket which will directly alert the responder in case of sound and sight disturbance however it does contain lights and buzzers regardless of this for maximum alert efficiency. The surface alert unit is left above rubble which has a light and buzzer to notify the responders above ground of the situation below ground and plan accordingly. Delta Alert as a whole unlocks communication and awareness like no other product in its field.
Future plans
The next step is to refine and iron out some more features then develop a minimum viable product and begin basic testing focusing especially on the rapid collapse ratcheting mechanism. This system is designed to instantly retract the legs by forcing the pawls out of place, allowing for quick emergency extraction. The long term goal is to partner with humanitarian orgs and manufacturers to bring Delta Alert into the wider market.
