What It Does

Blind zone areas can be eliminated by properly adjusting rear mirrors in a vehicle. The Intelligent View System (IVS) is an easily installed hardware that employs automated adjustment of the rear mirrors relative to the head position of the motorist.

The Inspiration

Out of 16 million motor vehicle accidents that occur annually in the United States of America,850 000 of them are related to blind zones. The National Traffic Highway Safety Administration (NTHSA) believes that the numbers may be higher and is increasing each year. All the current technologies addressing blind zones has live interaction with the motorist that may disorientate them at some point due to an overload of stimuli and they would be unreceptive to the warning signs over time. The IVS is based on the very principle that blind zones can be effectively reduced by adjusting the rear mirrors without any external stimuli.

How It Works

The IVS hardware compose of a microcontroller and a camera that are easily installed into the car.The IVS is initiated once the car is started. The camera is then turned on. The frames captured by the camera is processed by the microcontroller. If there is no face detected, the camera keeps relaying the frames to the microcontroller until the motorist’s face is detected. Once the motorist’s face is detected, a comfort zone area is automatically set up. This is to ensure slight changes of the motorist head would not affect the rear mirrors. There are conditions which must be met before the rear mirrors are recalibrated. The system continuosly checks whether the head position has been altered. If it has been altered the whole process is repeated, if not the system waits until the head position is altered. The IVS is a cheap and effective blind-spot elimination solution that provides the motorist the best possible rear view all the time.

Stages of Development

The idea was initially conceived after reading an article about the increasing number of accidents related to blind spots. Knowing the fact that they were already existing technologies to tackle this problem, we wondered the reasons as to why is it still happening. We then listed all the pros and cons of existing BSM techs and analysed on ways to completely solve this problem. We finally arrived at an idea. The IVS was its name. The IVS comprise of only 2 hardwares (camera & microcontroller). Initially the software was not up to par. The system was not responsive and there were slight delay. With a little alteration, we made it to respond as intended. After countless adjustments we then tested the effectiveness of the prototype on the road with volunteers. Almost all concluded that the system was indeed effective and reliable. Once the system was working as intended, the challenge was to seamlessly integrate in into the car. We also focussed on ensuring that anyone without any technical expertise can install it.


The IVS is cheaper than any blind spot method (BSM) tech as it compose of only 2 hardware which can be easily installed into any vehicle. The IVS prevents the need for motorist to manually adjust their rear mirrors which can be troublesome and also time consuming. The IVS eliminates blind spots and at the same time maintain the situational awareness provided by the rear mirrors unlike conventional blind spot method (BSM) technologies which fail to do so. The lifespan of the IVS is expected to be longer compared to existing BSM tech because all the components are located in the interior of the car and not exposed to the harsh environment. The IVS’s effectiveness is not affected by environmental conditions unlike other BSM techs which employs ultrasonic sensors or even radar. The IVS is a passive system as it operates without the knowledge of the motorist thus it doesn’t distract the motorist unlike other BSM techs that uses either visual, audio or even haptic.

Future Plans

The design as for now is incredibly effective and efficient in terms of performance. We are focusing on enabling the prototype to be seamlessly integrated into the interior of the car. All BSM techs are exclusive for expensive cars. Our vision is to ensure anyone can afford it. We also want anyone without any technical expertise to be able to install it by themselves. The IVS is indeed an effective solution. We hope everyone will be able to use it as it can save countless lives.
