What It Does

Bee2Bee is a mobile, lightweight and quick-to-assemble culture system for bees. It supports the care of bee colonies in a changing and becoming unattractive landscape.

The Inspiration

The work BEE2BEE deals with the management of bees for pollination of our agricultural produced food. The population of the honeybee, which is the third most important animal after cows and pigs for our food production, declines for the last years. New environmental factors that are caused by globalization, industrialization and population growth, jeopardizing the ecosystem and thus the habitat of bees.

How It Works

Bee2Bee is a mobile, lightweight and quick-to-assemble culture system for bees. It supports the care of bee colonies in a changing and becoming unattractive landscape.
Putting up a beehive is like putting up a parasol.
The possibilities of digital networking be used to monitor the hives and serve to simplify the medical treatment and care of the insects. Without human intervention, there would be no wild honeybee population in Germany anymore.
The bee-tent is a human controlled habitat. Temperature and weight of the hive and flight frequency of the bees can display the health of the insects. Shape, size and handling of the hive depend on functional aspects, scientific research of behavioral biologist Thomas D. Seeley, necessary operations of the beekeeper and the landscape of agricultural land.

Stages of Development

1.The work / documentation of the work BEE2BEE begins with an extensive interdisciplinary analysis. Biological as well as artisanal factors of bees and beekeeping were analyzed and documented (The bee and the flower, diseases and the stagnating population of honeybees, the traditional job of the beekeeper, the importance of honeybees to humans).
2. Concepts for bee networks / Bee monitoring: networking, digitization and monitoring of beehives for a simplified bee care.
3.The modernization of the classic beehive - Easy handling of the colony with the least possible effort with a focus on pollination.
4. The most important factor of the honeybee is their pollination and not honey extraction ==> shaping a new profession, pollination beekeeper.
5. Emergence of the bee tent. Put up like a parasol.
6. Determination of design factors: Thomas D. Seeley - Description of biological factors (size of the hive, size of the entrance, shape, etc.) for the ideal hive for bees.
7. Ideal dimensions, sizes and materials shape the bee tent
8. Functional studies of form, 1: 1 prototypes, material testing and handling trials

Novelty

Use swarm behavior.
The swarm behavior is the natural reproduction of bees. It promotes the biodiversity of the honeybee population. This takes place at certain intervals, depending on the size of the swarm and the health status of the queen. If shortage of space exists, the swarm divides and one part looks for a new housing. Scouting a new hive proceeds rapidly and purposefully.

The bee network.
This behavior of the bee is supported by the design and concept BEE2BEE. It changes the profession of pollination beekeeper decisively towards a welfare and effective attitude of bees in agriculture. BEE2BEE designed a habitat for the bee in an unattractive becoming landscape, supports pollination of agricultural land and gives the bee their sovereignty back. Empty tents are available for swarming bees. BEE2BEE is a network and monitored honeybee environment.

Future Plans

The Exchange with beekeepers and biologists this year give me the hope to build a prototype for tests with bees in February next year. BEE2BEE makes beekeeping more efficient and at the same time species-appropriate. I want to draw attention by my project to the already instrumentalized "beekeeping in boxes". The classic image of the beekeeper needs to change. Only in this way we get the opportunity for sustainable help for the bees and to have them in future as pollinators in our industrialized world.
