Function

A.S.I is an adjustable sound isolation earphone accessory, which increases isolation of external noise using a silicone ear bud, which the user can adjust to fit their ears, this improves the listening experience for the user. A.S.I also includes a decibel reducer, which limits the decibel level to below 85dB to prevent Noise Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL).

Inspiration

The inspiration for this design came from observing earphones users and noticing how loud the music from their earphones was. This led to research in to NIHL and a design which limits the danger of NIHL and increases sound isolation, this is to allow the user to listen at lower sound levels but still enjoy their music.

Development

Development began by identifying user habits. This information was considered throughout the design process. Interviews were conducted with audiologists and Irish deafness charity “DeafHear”. From the interviews with audiologists, it was learned that the better an ear bud fits a person’s ear, the better the sound isolation. It was decided that adjustable fit should incorporated in to the design. 85dB was chosen as the max decibel rate based on interviews and research. The design developed to an earphone accessory that can be used with all ear bud style earphones and mp3 players, which use an 3.5mm stereo jack. Sound isolation levels and decibel levels were both tested under laboratory conditions resulting in a product, which increases sound isolation by 3dB and reduces earphone output to below 85dB
