Function

A Portable water bottle for filtration and UV sterilisation of water anywhere in the world in 2 minutes. The water bottle works by first filling the outer chamber with dirty water from any lake, stream or dirty puddle. The inner chamber is plunged though the outer chamber and the water is filtered though a custom designed filter, down to 4 micron in particle size. Once the water is clear it is sterilised for 90 seconds using a wind-up Ultra Violet bulb. Once complete the water is safe to drink. The whole process takes 2 minutes.

Inspiration

While travelling though Zambia in Africa I realised the reliance people have on chlorine and iodine tablets; these take about 30 minutes to create safe drinking water and lave a unpleasant taste. I thought that there must be a simpler and faster way of sterilising water using new technology. It was then that I looked into using a wind-up Ultra Violet light to sterilise the water quickly without any distortion to taste.

Development

A fully working prototype has been produced and scientifically proven to sterilise 99.9% of bacteria and viruses. The following areas have been developed and tested: Original filter designed which filters any soiled water down to 4 micron in particle size. (fully scientifically proven) A wind-up Ultra violet light system has been produced, including a custom designed PCB to monitor winding frequency and to give user feedback when the water is sterile. The casing has been designed for both prototype production and manufacture.
